Brasil 1
Salvador de Bahia
The capitol of the state Bahia. Lively, full of music but many places kept alive only for tourists. The famous Pelorinho quarter is never visited by Bahians. Nevertheless it is worthwhile to see. UNESCO world heritage anyway.
Itaparica
An island vis-a-vis of Salvador. Calm, safe and a great place to leave a boat at anchor. We should have chosen this as the first point of entry instead of Salvador.
Rio Paraguacu 1 - atmospheric impressions
If you wake up in the morning and dare to glance over deck you can end up speechless. Silence in front of a country village and countless riverarms with an endless mangrove coastline.
Rio Paraguacu 2 - local fisher men
The local transport sail boats have huge sails. And they know how to use them. Heavy boats which we could hardly compete with. They are built completely without any drawing but always find a buyer and are still one main transportation vehicle for river residents. Winches are only for cowards.
Rio Paraguacu 3 - marvelous coastline
I use words of Werner form SY Out-of-Rosenheim: He experienced goose-skin while drifting through the valley. So did we. In particular if you have seen only deserted Cabo Verde islands and the wide Atlantic.
Rio Paraguacu 4 - anchoring and hikes near Maragojipe
A small country town which was described as having a live like 200 years ago. That was clearly wrong but it is still a very brazilian village, where farmers come to town on their mules.
Ilha do Frade & Bom Jesus
An island surrounded by barbwire and private property. but widely untouched. Djungle we could not cross. So we stayed on some muddy paths. All this paradise in viewing distance of Salvador. Just impossible to find in Europe.
Aratu Bay
A bay we visited for the shipyard and yacht club. Safe, calm, friendly, comfortable in an otherwise dangerous area where mugging in buslines and streets is usual.
Ferry graveyard in Aratu
Pictures of another world. I climbed into two ferry wrecks, probably illegally. A steel staircase broke down under me because it was rotten. The engine room kept me fascinated for hours on several days. Enjoy and dive into a forbidden world which is under heavy decay attack.
Haul out for maintenance in Marina do Aratu
Would we do it again? NO! We had a stressy time but got all things done. At the end we made it. A real brasilian experience. As always, for every trouble we had we also had two nice things that happened to us.
